FAQ - General Questions

Do you have a retail store?

The Bone Room retail store is located in Berkeley, California. We encourage you to visit, as we can't possibly list all our unique items on-line! We are located at 1569 Solano Avenue, a well known one and a quarter mile long street of small stores, restaurants and theatres. Our hours are Tuesday thru Saturday, 11 AM to 6 PM. We are closed Sundays and Mondays.

Do you ship items?

We ship most of our items throughout the United States, and to many foreign localities. Please see our Order page for shipping general information and charges.

A few of our items cannot be shipped internationally. Generally these are CITES species. Individual countries may prohibit certain types of items. Please see the Additional Information for International Orders found on our order page .

What kinds of items do you sell ?

The Bone Room specializes in a wide variety of natural history items from around the world. Our main categories pertain to human and animal bones, fossils, fossil and bone casts and mounted and pinned insects. We also carry a large variety of unclassifiable animal remnants such as claws and teeth, insect collecting supplies, toys and jewelry. We choose to offer items that spark our artistic and scientific curiosity, and that may be unavailable anywhere else.

How do I place an order?

Please see our order page for information on ordering our items.

Are the animals killed for their bones?

Please read About Our Products , as this addresses this common concern. In short, no animal was killed just for its bones. Rather, they are killed or die naturally for other reasons, and the bones are a by-product that we choose to make available to you rather than see destroyed.

I have a bone/fossil/etc. that I would like to sell. Will you buy it?

The Bone Room acquires many of its most unique items from private individuals. If you are interested in selling an item, you will need to talk to the Bone Room's owner, Ron Cauble. If you live close by, the best thing to do is to bring the item in for evaluation. If you are some distance away, you may send photographs and a detailed description. Make sure to include:

  • A ruler or other recognizable objects in your photographs
  • Clear, straight-on views of each face of the item.
  • Any information pertaining to the original acquisition or collection of the item, such as locality and date.
  • Verbal description of any characteristics not immediately visible from the photograph.

For certain small, high-priced items we may ask that you send us the item on approval so that we may evaluate it first hand.

You may also inquire about selling items on consignment.

Please be aware that we must abide by laws and so will not purchase certain classes of items. Items that we may not purchase include any part of a Federal or State of California Endangered Species, Migratory Birds, Modern Marine Mammal material (exceptions for documented pre-act specimens and fossil material), modern bears, native North American deer, and North American fur mammals except for those taken under a valid trapping license.
