Nets, Pins, & Other Necessities - For your first foray into the world of insect collecting, you'll need a few supplies. A good net and proper insect pins are the barest of essentials. We offer an assortment of items to help you amass a personal insect collection!

Insect Nets

Basic Insect Net
Practical, inexpensive nets for beginning or occasional collectors. Smooth hardwood handles and polyester netting. Adult net has a 15" diameter ring and a 36" handle. Student net has a 12" diameter ring and an 18" inch handle to fit kid-sized hands. Ring can be removed from handle for shipping or storage.

Collapsible Insect Net
A solution for traveling collectors! These nets fold down to approximately 1/3 of the ring size. Nets are sold with a 5" aluminum handle. For a complete field-kit, you will need to purchase the net itself, one or more extensions, and a plastic handle grip. Extensions are anodized aluminum, net is white polyester with sailcloth band.

Insect Kill Jar

Insect Kill Jars
These glass jars contain a porous hard plaster lid insert to prevent the killing fluid from damaging specimens. Killing fluid is not included! We recommend using ethyl acetate due to its low toxicity.

Insect Specimen Storage

Once you have your specimens pinned and labeled, what do you do with them? Insects are delicate things, and need a protected space if they are to be enjoyed for years to come. We offer several sizes of storage boxes for your collection.

Economy Storage Box
This is our least expensive standard storage box. Made from heavy duty cardboard with a pinnable base. This, along with a no-pest strip, will keep your insects safe from the elements and other insect when not in use.

Schmitt Boxes
Large pinnable wooden insect boxes with a hinged lids. These boxes are mostly used and not always available. Please call to verify availability, be put on the wish list, or inquire about other options.

Riker Mounts
An easy way to display insects (and just about anything else)! Instead of being pinned, specimens are pressed between a white cotton backing and a glass front. Deeper mounts can be converted into a simple pinning box if cotton is removed and replaced with a thin piece of styrene, foam board, or other pinnable material.
