Human Male Asian Skull

BC-016

This is an excellent example of a skull from an Asian individual with a metopic suture. A metopic suture is the union point for the two halves of the frontal bone that fuse during skeletal development and is usually obliterated (completely fused with no trace of the suture) by the age of 6. However it is not unusual to find this suture in adults.

Ancestry assessment can be difficult to assess, however there are certain skull features that can point to an ancestral group. The cheekbones of this skull are wide, the palate has a somewhat rounded shape, the incisors in the upper jaw are prominently shovel-shaped, and there is no edge-on-edge incisal bite. Another interesting feature of this skull is a button osteoma of the left maxilla, next to the lower part of the nasal aperture.
