Fertility Figurine - Tell Halaf, Syria

Terra cotta with traces of salt or calcium from pigments. From Tell Halaf, Syria. Circa 4,000 BC. 2 3/4” top to bottom. Can sit with support at back.

These figures were made by factories in ancient times, and probably any woman who wanted to become pregnant probably had one of these statuettes in their home. Of course that is all speculation. What we do know is that nearly identical figurines have been found by the hundreds in Middle Eastern digs.

The remains of the old pigment is very delicate and is flaking off - I do not want to 'fix' the surface, so be aware that pieces of the 'clothing' are likely to fall off.

Price: $2,000

Henry Moore seemed to take some inspiration from ancient fertility symbols
