What You're Seeing
This fossilized jaw fragment preserves the lower teeth and mandible of an Ice Age horse. The specimen shows four well-preserved teeth with the characteristic high crowns and complex enamel patterns that allowed these ancient horses to efficiently grind tough prairie grasses.
Why This Matters
Horses evolved in North America over 55 million years, developing from small, multi-toed forest dwellers into the large, single-toed grazers we know today. During the Pleistocene, numerous horse species roamed the American continent alongside mammoths, giant bison, and saber-toothed cats.
Key Features
High-Crowned Teeth: The tall tooth crowns (hypsodont dentition) show this horse was adapted for a diet of abrasive grasses. As the grinding surfaces wore down from constant use, more tooth emerged from the jaw.
Complex Enamel: The intricate folding patterns in the enamel created multiple cutting edges, making these teeth incredibly efficient grinding tools.
Robust Jaw: The thick, sturdy mandible supported the powerful chewing muscles needed to process tough vegetation.
The Mystery
Horses mysteriously vanished from North America around 10,000 years ago, along with many other large mammals. Climate change, human hunting, or disease may have contributed to their extinction. Horses wouldn't return to North America until Spanish explorers reintroduced them in the 1500s.
