Salamanders are remarkable amphibians that can regenerate entire limbs, tails, and even portions of their hearts and brains when injured, making them living masters of biological repair that scientists study intensively for medical breakthroughs. These moisture-loving creatures breathe primarily through their skin rather than lungs, which means they must stay perpetually damp and can essentially drown in air if they dry out completely. Perhaps most surprisingly, some salamander species are completely lungless and rely entirely on their skin and mouth lining for oxygen exchange, while others can survive being frozen solid in winter ice and simply thaw out in spring, ready to continue their lives as if nothing happened. The largest salamanders in the world, found in China and Japan, can grow over five feet long and live for decades, while the smallest are barely larger than a paperclip, yet both share the same extraordinary ability to regrow lost body parts that has fascinated humans for centuries.
