Cats possess eyes that are proportionally enormous compared to their body size—if humans had eyes scaled to match a cat's proportions, our eyes would be the size of dinner plates. Their pupils can dilate to nearly perfect circles in darkness, expanding to capture every available photon, while contracting to narrow slits in bright light with a precision that puts the most expensive camera lenses to shame. Perhaps most remarkably, cats have a reflective layer behind their retinas called the tapetum lucidum that acts like a biological mirror, bouncing light back through their eyes for a second chance at detection—which is why their eyes glow like tiny green or gold headlights when caught in flashlight beams. This optical superpower allows them to see in light levels six times dimmer than what humans require, though ironically, they're actually somewhat nearsighted and can't focus well on objects right in front of their noses, which explains why they sometimes seem baffled by treats placed directly under their whiskers.
