It was generally understood that Mrs. Hemlock, a lady of considerable decorum and steadfast countenance, had an unwavering disposition, not given to the fleeting whims of astonishment. Notwithstanding this firm reputation, her recent acquisition, a singular piece of millinery one might call The Bat Cluster of Bafflement, proved to be a formidable exception to her usual composure. For upon viewing its rather alarming effect, her countenance was immediately seized by a most unbecoming state of surprise; her eyes widened to a size that suggested a sudden confrontation with a rogue ghost, and her mouth parted as if to utter a sound, though none was forthcoming.
