Pipistrellus imbricatus, is now more commonly known by its updated scientific name, Hypsugo imbricatus. It is a species of vesper bat, also known as the brown pipistrelle.

Here is a summary of what is known about this bat:

Habitat and Distribution

  • Geographic Range: This species is native to Southeast Asia and is found in Indonesia (Java, Kangean, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi, and Lesser Sunda) and Malaysia (Sarawak on Borneo).
  • Habitat: Hypsugo imbricatus is an insectivorous bat that typically lives in forests at low elevations. It has also been found in a variety of other habitats, including open woodlands, wetlands, farmlands, and urban areas. It is known to roost in small colonies.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: This is a small bat with a head-body length of approximately 41-49 mm and a tail length of 35-41 mm.
  • Fur: Its dorsal fur is a rich, medium brown, while its ventral fur is paler.
  • Ears: It has moderately large and triangular ears.

Behavior and Diet

  • Diet: As an insectivore, it feeds on small flying insects.
  • Roosting: It is known to roost in small groups. Some observations suggest it may roost in places like banana leaves.
  • Flight: Like other pipistrelles, it is likely an erratic flier, known for its agile and nimble movements.

Conservation Status

  • The brown pipistrelle is listed as "Least Concern" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
  • However, its population is believed to be in decline due to threats like deforestation for logging, agriculture (e.g., oil palm plantations), and limestone mining.
