Of course. This is a very well-known and beautiful shell. Based on its distinct, intricate pattern, this is a Textile Cone (Conus textile).

⚠️ EXTREME WARNING: Dangerously Venomous ⚠️

This is one of the most dangerous and venomous animals in the ocean. If the snail were alive inside this shell, it would be capable of delivering a sting that could be fatal to humans. While the shell itself is safe to handle if it is completely empty, it is critical to be aware of the danger associated with the living animal. Never handle a live cone snail.

Here are the details on your shell:

  • Identification: The Textile Cone gets its name from its remarkable and complex pattern, which resembles a fine cloth or tapestry. It features a network of brownish-yellow or golden-brown markings overlaid with characteristic white, tent-like triangles.
  • Size: A 2-inch size is very typical for this species, though they can grow slightly larger.
  • The Animal and its Venom: The living snail is a predator that hunts other marine snails. It has a specialized, harpoon-like tooth (called a radula) that it can extend rapidly to inject a powerful cocktail of neurotoxins (conotoxins) into its prey. There is no effective antivenom for a Textile Cone sting.
  • Habitat and Range: Textile Cones are found in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, from the coast of East Africa to Hawaii and French Polynesia. They typically live in and around coral reefs, hiding in sand or under rocks during the day.
  • You have a classic and highly sought-after collector's shell. It is beautiful, but it is famous primarily for the potent danger of the animal that creates it.
