Ivory Cone

This is a cone snail, identifiable by its classic conical shape. Based on the smooth, uniform creamy-white color and form, this is very likely an Ivory Cone (Conus eburneus).

While this species often has rows of orange or dark spots, it is quite common to find specimens like yours that are a pure, solid ivory color.

⚠️ Important Safety Warning ⚠️

Like all cone snails, the animal that creates this shell is venomous. While the Ivory Cone is not considered as dangerous to humans as the Textile Cone (it preys on worms, not fish), its sting can still be very painful and medically significant. A live cone snail of any species should never be handled with bare hands.

Here are the details on your shell:

  • Identification: Its key features are the smooth, polished-looking surface, the classic cone shape, and its solid ivory or cream coloration. The top (spire) is typically low and flattened.
  • Size: Your shell, at 2 inches, is a standard adult size for this species.
  • The Animal: The Ivory Cone snail is a nocturnal predator. It spends its days buried in the sand and emerges at night to hunt for marine worms, which it immobilizes with a venomous harpoon-like tooth.
  • Habitat and Range: This is a common and widespread species found throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean. It lives in shallow water on sandy flats, often near coral reefs.
