This is a fascinating and delicate-looking shell. Based on its unique shape with the extremely long, slender canals at both ends, this is a Spindle Tibia, also commonly known as a Shin-bone Tibia. The scientific name is Tibia fusus.

Its graceful, elongated form makes it a favorite among shell collectors.

Here are the key details about your shell:

  • Identification: The most defining characteristic is its spindle shape with a bulbous central body that tapers at both ends into long, fragile siphonal canals. The shell is typically a pale white, cream, or light tan color.
  • Size: Your 2-inch specimen is on the smaller side, as this species can grow to be quite large, sometimes reaching lengths of 9 to 12 inches. Shells of your size are often from younger snails.
  • Habitat and Range: This is a species of sea snail found in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, from the coast of East Africa to the Philippines and Japan. It lives in deep water on sandy or muddy seabeds.
  • The Animal: The snail that creates this shell is a sand-dweller. The long canal in the front (the anterior canal) houses the snail's siphon, which it uses to draw in water to breathe while it is buried in the sand. The long rear canal (posterior canal) is thought to provide stability and balance for the snail as it moves through the soft substrate.
