This is a beautiful shell with very distinct features. Based on its high, pointed spire, strong vertical (axial) ribs, and the overall shape, this is a Rugose Miter, with the scientific name Vexillum rugosum.

Here are the key details about your shell:

  • Identification: The most prominent features are the strong, rounded, vertical ribs that run the length of each whorl, giving it a pleated or folded appearance. The shell has a tall, sharp spire and is typically a creamy white or yellowish color, often with a faint, broad brown band around the middle of the body whorl. At 2 inches, your specimen is a perfect example of a typical adult size.
  • Habitat and Range: The Rugose Miter is a species of sea snail found in the warm, shallow waters of the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean. It typically lives in sandy areas near coral reefs.
  • The Animal: The snail that creates this shell is a carnivore and predator. Miter snails are known to hunt marine worms and other small mollusks that they find burrowing in the sand.
  • Name: The name "rugose" is a direct reference to the shell's texture, meaning "wrinkled" or "ridged," which accurately describes its strongly ribbed surface.
