The javelina (pronounced Ha - va - LEE - na), or collared peccary, is a smallish pig-like animal native to portions of South, Central and southwestern North America (and is the only pig-like wild animal native to the United States). Characteristics distinguishing peccaries from pigs are: downward pointing tusks, smaller size, longer, thinner legs, smaller hooves (with 3 hind toes rather than 4) and extremely short tail. They also have more complex stomachs. Notably, peccaries have a musk gland on their rump, and are accompanied by a strong odor (another common name for this animal is musk hog). Javelinas weigh about 30 lbs, have large heads, long snouts, and barrel shaped bodies covered with thick bristly gray to grizzled black hair, an indistinct, whitish marking (collar) around their neck and a mane (in adults) along their back. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
