Bone Clones Haitian Solenodon Skull Cast (Replica), BC-053
Solenodon paradoxus
3" L x 1 ½" W x 1 ¼" H 7.6L x 3.3W x 3H (cm)
The Haitian solenodon, also known as the Hispaniolan solenodon, lives only on the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic). This two-pound mammal looks a bit like a rat with the long nose of an elephant shrew. The family Solenodontidae contains one surviving genus (Solenodon) and two endangered species, both of which we are proud to offer (the other is found in Cuba). Unique among mammals is their ability to produce toxic saliva. A special groove in the second incisor carries the poison to their victims (similar to gila monsters). The original skull was graciously loaned to us by the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. A portion of each sale goes to the museum to further its research. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
