The platypus and the echidna are the only mammals to lay eggs. Distributed in eastern Australia and Tasmania, the platypus shares other characteristics with reptiles: eye structure, pectoral girdle structure, and a cloaca. Its mammalian traits include its fur, four-chambered heart, and nursing capacity. The female lays one or two eggs, which have an incubation period of about ten days. When the eggs hatch, the babies are tiny and are nursed for 3 to 4 months.
