Femur from the Australopithecus afarensis A.L. 288-1 skeleton known as Lucy. Discovered by Donald Johanson in 1974 in Ethiopia. Lucy, at 3.2 million years, has been considered the first human ancestor. This is now being challenged by the discovery of Kenyanthropus, described in 2001 by Leakey.
